The splendid basso Cesare Siepi has died. They truly do not make opera singers with this kind of class and glamour any more. Not only was he a great artist, he was steaming hott right into old age.
My sister and I once followed him several blocks from the Met stage door, adolescent hormones a-boiling. He wore an amazing grey summer suit of some stars-only soft-looking material, and was eating a Golden Delicious apple. Then he got on a bus(!) and was gone. We had palpitations for about a week afterwards.
