When I was very, very  young, Frankie Laine was always on the radio. He usually sang bizarre 'cowboy'-type songs, including  lots of curious ('YAH!!!') vocalisations.
His huge voice had a distintcly weird quality to me, and I was always vaguely unsettled  by it, especially when he sang  the spooky COOL WATER.
He was frequently on TV, too, and looked as weird as he sounded. The spectacular what-a-giveaway toupee was particularly disconcerting, but he maintained it throughout his long career.
Evidently he was a very nice man, from a Mafia background, who once discovered a shot-dead grandfather at the foot of the stairs, as a nipper.

Alas, he has been headed up and moved out at 93. RIP
