Bad Day in the West End...

I had a feeling there might be an 'incident' today...On the bus to Oxford Street, this young man 'of Middle Eastern Apearance' got on with a big rucksack, and sat looking around anxiously, much to my dismay. (He was, of course, a tourist type unsure of his stop-)I continued to feel uneasy , but carried on to:

ORDERING THE ORDINARY: '...works in diverse media that transform the basic stuff of the common place and dull into pieces that are rich in meaning' (ie: lots of old mattresses with stuffing coming out, and bronze cast nails lying around...) I did rather like Jimmie Durham's flower of the death of loneliness andMatthias Muller's poetically mopey Album I forget who had framed the old newspapers with strange stories, etc., but one had a rather amazing photo of Bush Sr. waving a weird little effigy of his wife Barbara at an admiring crowd...

CHANGES OF MIND:BELIEF AND TRANSFORMATION This was altogether more satisfactory, although the place took ages to find. I particularly liked Nathan Cley's JERUSALEM SYNDOME, and the reliably spooky Bill Viola's Unspoken (Silver and Gold in which two ghostly heads gurn the gamut from grief to awed ecstasy and slowly fade away...

By the time I'd seen all that and got back to Trafalgar Square, it was all starting to percolate. Sirens galore, people looking worried, lots of cellphone activity, rumours, etc. Busses were few, and packed when they arrived. Lots of screaming into cellphones, now...'FOUR BOMBS!!!DON'T YOU CARE WHAT HAPPENS TO ME!? I COULD BE DEAD FOR ALL YOU CARE!!!',etc.etc., shrieking infants, having to stand because someone gimpier got on,the works. I was very grateful to at least be on the way home, though, and here I am. Whew!
Tony says we can all relax now, but there are still a lot of sirens around here...
