Oh, the anguish of Creative Blockery. Saw the latest modern HAMLET on Film 4 last night. Ethan Hawke was OK, I suppose, but he has one of those irritating American-youth voices, hardly appropriate for delivering poetry. It's not the accent,as such, more the feeble, whiny, timbre and very limited range. You need a more operatic sound to really take on the Bard. Kyle MacLachlan was very good as Claudius, though. He seems to improve with age. I wondered how they were going to do the gravedigger/ Yorick scene in such a very up -to -date, urban environment, lobbing skulls around, etc. They simply cut it,except for a quick shot of a guy digging and singing.
