Creepy Calcutta, etc...

Has anyone been to Calcutta/Kolkata?  I suppose it's been cleaned up and modernised by now. I've always been a bit unnerved by the very idea of it, and just started reading another Dan Simmons thriller THE SONG OF KALI, which is pretty spooky, set in the 70's. I remember also being scared by Poppy Z Brite's CALCUTTA, LORD OF NERVES, too.  When I was a kid, if our room was a mess, my mother used to rage 'It's like the Black Hole of Calcutta in here.' which sounded pretty disturbing, although we didn't actually know what she was talking about, for years...
I couldn't get up until 8:30 again, today. Went to St Thomas' to have the damn blood tests. The bus broke down on the way, and we were all turned off. Once I got there, though, I didn't have to wait long, which was a mercy. On the way home, I went to Coffee Lovers, settled in to scan the METRO, and all of a sudden, only having drunk about a third of my coffee, I had to jump up, stumble down an alleyway and be sick! This is getting VERY old.
I'd left my workout until late, and it was nearly dark in the park by the time I finished. It was a bit scary, and there was a fairly eerie sky this evening.
